I recently bought a 0 calorie soft drink made with maltodextrin. isnt this sugar which should have calories?

the brand was great value, which is a walmart distributed brand. to be honest it almost tastes to good to be true. i was under the imprssion maltodextrin was a simple carbohydrate of a starch origin, it also contained aspartame but in a lesser amount.
Answer:
I would have to agree with you...maltodextrin is very similar to glucose, and is absorbed into the blood stream at the same rate. Being a carbohydrate, it should have 4 calories per gram. How much is in the soft drink?
you are correct...maltodextrin is a glucose polymer and it is made from corn starch just like dextrose. it has a GI of 100 the same as dextrose and will jack up your blood sugar when consumed in excess. the US government allows companies to deceptively label food items. this is why it's up to the individual to learn what they are consuming on a regular basis.
Unless the soft drink was pure water, it had calories in it.
